Weight Loss Supplements
August 25th, 2008Obesity is one of the primary health concerns of the 21st century. Over weight people are desperate to lose weight and gain a shapely figure or physique and are ready to try out anything to attain their goal, from power yoga to fad diets to dietary supplements.
Playing on the sentiments of obese people trying hard to counter the social stigma attached to being similar to an oversized balloon, weight loss supplements have flooded the market and have chosen a powerful marketing blitz as their tool to lure customers.
Over the past few years, the popularity of weight loss supplements has increased by leaps and bounds along with rising awareness of the potential health hazards associated with obesity.
These supplements may be herbs or pills or powder to be mixed with water or milk or medicines and they claim to burn calories and make you lose weight. These so called magic pills and wonder remedies are available over the counter and are called OTC dietary/weight loss supplements.
People are blindly hooked on to these things, but most of them don’t know that weight loss supplements are anything but safe and wreak havoc on your system in the long run. On top of that these hardly ever work and are a complete waste of money and health.
You should consult your doctor before trying out weight loss supplements and your physician would surely discourage you from using such harmful worthless products.
A mind boggling variety of 50 individual dietary supplements and 125 combination weight loss supplementary cures will spoil you for choice , but they don’t match up to the standards or criteria set down by the medical associations or communities of the country or by FDA i.e. UNITED STATES FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION.
With some products, users have reported an insignificant amount of weight loss. But the potential side effects of these strong products have led to many of these weight loss dietary supplements being banned.
But some chemists, in spite of the ban placed on some of them, are selling them. Weight loss supplements like CHROMIUM, GUAR GUM, and CHITOSAN etc are popular and claim to be market leaders, but most of them are ineffective and the long term side effects are hazardous and fatal. No wonder doctors always advise against these harmful products.
Herbal weight loss supplements, which claim to be ‘safer’ than the chemical ones contain ingredients like hydroxycitric acid, pyruvate, I-carnitine, glucomannan, guarana, conjugated linoleic acid, ephedra or ephedrine, ginseng etc and result in heart ailments and drastic rise in blood pressure!
So you can easily understand how safe they are! FDA hasn’t given them approval. Two other fat burners are ST. JOHN’S WORT and green tea. The latter is safe and research has proved that green tea can burn 78 calories per day.
It is best to avoid pills and supplements which claim to reduce your weight for you without involving any kind of physical exertion/exercise. If you look after your own health you will also be better equipped to look after the health of your babies or older children. They will really thank you in the end.
